Deep River Park Neglect: Why Our Town Deserves Better Care

I am disappointed in our elected leaders. Both of my competitors in this election are currently in office as First Selectman and Selectman. They are both directly responsible for the care and maintenance of our town and it’s parks.

I visited Plattwood Park today, and what I found was troubling. The condition is deplorable. Almost zero maintenance has been performed over the last two years: weeds growing everywhere, an unusable beach, litter, trash, dirty socks, and empty alcohol containers litter the ground, and the swing set rusted out and unsafe.

What is even more troubling is that right now the Board of Selectmen have a bid request out for a new restroom building at Plattwood. They are preparing to spend money on a facility that they do not even perform basic maintenance on.

Swings for the swing set? $180 for four — I checked. Getting the town crew out and spending an afternoon cleaning up the trash and trimming with them? No cost. -It’s not hard, it just takes initiative.

This total lack of attention to detail and care is why I am running. If elected, I pledge to clean up our parks, pay attention to the details, and maximize your tax dollars by keeping the tax funded facilities you can actually use pristine.

Sincerely,

Ozzie Sheppard.
